DSCN0194.JPG The bus number 88 from carnarfon terminates in Llanberis near the Snowdon mountain railway and the Lake railway. There is a path through a field to Gilfach Ddu,where the National Slate Museum is situated. Admission is FREE. In the summer it is open from 10am and 5 pm.--- There is car parking with a charge. In the museum is a gift shop and a cafe.-- A 12 minute film gives interesting information, this is at set times so look out for this. Also at set time is the slate splitting demonstraton, this is the highlight of my visit. There are several work shops, including a blacksmiths with live demonstrations.------Here in the museum grounds is the largest Water Wheel on mainland Britain. There are steps up to the wheel house, but i used the easy way by lift.------------There are rebuit quarrymen cottages ,which can be visited inside.----------------At its height the Slate works employed over 3000 men. The Quarry and workshops closed in 1969, and the buildings became a museum in 1972.--------On leaving the museum for Llanberis village i could have walked back the way i came, but it was time for the Lake Railway train,at £2.50 fare. This train is not available on journey to museum as it does not stop on outward journey. I found the Slate Museum very interesting.
